What’s it like? Epoisses is a cow’s milk cheese that is washed in Marc de Bourgogne to create a pungent, spicy classic that is a manifestation of everything we hold dear here at Pong.
Where’s it from? Made only in Burgundy this Epoisses is from the master fromager Gaugry and is the AOC UNPASTEURISED version. It comes as a 250g circular whole cheese in a wooden casing.
You will find Epoisses in The Ultimate Pong Box and The French Superieur Selection Box. Some British alternatives include Stinking Bishop and Golden Cenarth.
Recipes:
This cheese tart is a variation from chef Ludo Lefebvre’s original creation, we like the balance of salty ham and sweet apple with the pungent and rich Époisses de Bourgogne AOC. We scatter cheddar and a little sugar over the top for extra decadence.
There ain’t no party bread like a Pong Party Bread! The perfect centre piece to a feast, where all your friends can dig in and pull a piece off. This is our Pong version as it uses the pungent and spicy Epoisses de Bourgogne AOC.
This Smoked haddock with an Epoisses sauce recipe is a creation of head chef Paul Capener for the Vive le Cheese competition.

Epoisses
The smell of this cheese is deadly but the taste is absolutely wonderful. Its good for getting rid of unwanted guests lol. When I first bought it I put it in a box which I sellotaped and put it in the garden shed.Yes it really is that bad.Still its a good way of eating the whole lot myself.
Try it you will LOVE it.It tastes nothing like it smells.Honest.

Napoleon loved it!
“Napoleon was a particular fan of the cheese and the famous epicure Brillat-Savarin himself classed it as the ‘king of all cheeses'”.

Epoisses voted the best ever
Amongst others I took this cheese to a dinner party. Wasn’t aware of it’s smelly reputation and we were not affected by it during the meal. Perhaps because it didn’t last long ! The cheese gourmet of the group voted it his favourite cheese EVER. High praise indeed..

Epoisses stinky secret
I walked in tonight to a slightly unpleasant aroma in the kitchen; however, I was delighted to find that the reason was because my husband had order me this cheese which we had seen on a recent TV programme. I immediately went out, bought a French stick and a bottle of red wine and we sat and devoured the whole thing…..absolutely delicious!

Was wary of the reputation but the smell isn’t that strong. The taste however is wonderful – smooth, buttery & delicious. Voted the favourite in the Ultimate Pong from our 4 person cheese party

WOW is my first impression , the cheese is very stinky, but the actual cheese is rather tasty, very creamy, looking forward to my cheese and wine night with my husband this evening.
I would advise to taste the cheese before the rind though haha, the rind is not pleasant, has a sick small and the taste is exactly as it smells if not worse. I do however really like the cheese 🙂
